  • Embodiment in our daily lives

What is embodiment and how does it manifest itself in people in the workplace? Embodiment refers to a new understanding of our connection with our own bodies, which opens up new and effective ways of acting.

In which professional situations can we easily argue that…

    • the decision just doesn’t feel right?
    • the mere thought of continuing this project drains all my energy?

    I have a gut feeling …

By the time we find the time and courage to decipher these feelings and sensations, the decision may already have been made. We are not used to respecting our body’s signals and giving them space. Sometimes we lack the sensitivity, access to our feelings or simply the time to process them.

In our Western culture, we also have to overcome the fear that cultivating our sensitivity will bring with it increased vulnerability that we may not be able to fully control. Our performance culture and efficiency mindset make it difficult for us to develop or maintain this ability. Advancing digitalisation and the increased use of AI tools reinforce the dynamic of alienation from our bodily perceptions.

    ‘Cogito ergo sum’ … ?

Based on numerous studies and findings from consciousness research in recent years, we know that the hierarchy with the head as the first instance, which tells the rest of the body what to do, is not correct. Yet this statement by René Descartes has shaped our Western culture since the 17th century.

    • No matter how well thought out a change project may be, it will still not be implemented as the concept dictates.
    • Lists of pros and cons are not enough to help me decide on my professional development if my inner conviction is not right.
    • Even if I resolve to be mindful of my limits, will I do everything I can to set new healthy boundaries in the meeting?

Change does not come about because everything has been logically thought through and well argued, but because it is overall consistent for us – mental, physical, emotional and energetic aspects are equally important here and are constantly balanced in exchange with their environment (reference Maja Storch).

The good news: we can learn it (again)!

Reconnecting and using our entire body intelligence is a learnt skill. Reclaiming our bodies helps us make clear decisions and set healthier boundaries. Understanding our personal resources enables us to cope with times of turmoil and change with greater resilience.

Along my own path, I noticed that when I play the whole piano of emotions, I also feel joy and pleasure more intensely. This makes me feel more alive overall and more connected to myself and others.

    Your experience?

There are many different approaches in the field of Somatics and Embodiment that can lead you there. Which one appeals to you the most? Which one have you tried and what was your experience?
